Description

Twisted by the miasma, some of the once kind creatures in the Foamtail were corroded and reformed with a more dangerous mutation, and a far less peaceful outlook on life. Driving its original form to near extinction, these tyrants now rule the miasma-ridden seas in their stead. A long, multi pronged mucus layered spine tail protrudes when not hidden that sways back and forth with every move it makes, horrifying most who view it. Their color is a faded violet that is slowly becoming grey as the spines from their tail are also covering patches of their body like spikes. Their bodies are coated with mucus and move through the water at a medium speed not unlike most fish like salmon or koi. Their beauty now twisted was meant to hide the fact that they were tricksters of the ocean, though now are malevolent hunters which seek to drag their prey to the depths before feasting upon them.

Over the years people and especially sailors had come into contact with these creatures and had thought that they were Foamtails, and tried to play with and feed them. Before long however, many learned that these creatures were anything but the foamtails they knew, instead now a twisted species that was far more dangerous. Because of countless tragedies that followed, many legends state that if Spiketails are seen circling your ship, bad omens soon follow, as if they can smell their preys potential demise coming closer and closer..

Distribution

Deep oceans and along beaches, They are considered rare.

Habitat

These invasive creatures live in small groups of other Spiketails who treat each other like family. They swim around deep oceans, not being very scared of other predators because of their spikes and oxygen depriving abilities causing other sea life to drown. They are known to roam around inhabited docks and deep underwater, anywhere they can get to commit to their next big catch.

Diet

Ocean sea life, Mostly small fish they drown using their abilities. They are noted carnivores, preferring to hunt their prey down as it fills up most of their days with twisted enjoyment. They also prefer to hunt their distant cousins, the Foamtail, whenever possible.

Relations

Friendly towards humans while they are not inside the water, yet entering an area where it can drag you down may prove equally fatal. They are unable to be tamed, as they will always keep their self-centered nature about them. They are almost always hostile if someone is submerged in water with them, doubly so if they're vulnerable or unconscious.

Mechanics

  • When near a Spiketail they will blow bubbles barely toward people, making them think that they are attempting to play with them. When leaned over or if their balance is off kilter, they will leap upwards, knocking them into the ocean to feast.
    • Spiketails often hunt in packs of 4 or more.

Material Properties

*Spiketails spikes, when harvested, are a material not unlike steel in sheer malleability. If heated up to a similar temperature, one can create a non metallic sword of similar strength as an alternative.

Alchemical Properties

* The air gland of a spiketail is capable of creating a temporary massive thin bubble of self-replenishing air, and can be hardened with the right alchemicals to form an air bubble capable of walking into shallow and moderately deep reaches of the ocean with a group of people inside it.
