Catalysts

From Ephimoria Wiki

Catalysts or Instruments were the magical tools which origin mages used to cast their spells. These could vary from simple crystals to gloves, grimoires, staves or anything a mage can think of. There were some key rules with catalysts that were consistent across the board. All catalysts had a focal point such as the tip of the staff, or one of the many apexes of an orb, this was where magic comes from and also needs to be handheld by the mage.

In order to use multiple catalysts, the Mage must take 1 turn to switch focus on the new catalyst they're using.

Temporary Catalysts

Catalysts that were consumed upon use. Infusing these catalysts with one spell would cause it to be consumed.

Example include:

Stationary Catalysts

Catalysts that were immovable. These catalysts were used to cast powerful spells. They must have been a minimum size of 3x3 to function. Examples include:

Glyphic Circles

Large Orbs

Personal Catalysts

Catalysts that were customized to the casters disciplines. This was done by combining materials to create specialized tools to channel through the desired disciplines. These can be wands, staves, orbs, etc. So long as the catalyst holds an apex.

Disciplines

What disciplines a mage can cast was dependent on what additives they have on their catalysts. Of course, the mage themselves also needed to know said discipline.

Materials

Catalysts may only have had one additive stacked with the core material of said catalyst. Materials did not stack, nor could you put two common materials on a catalyst. When a discipline is tied to a common material on a catalyst, it could not be overwritten when transferred to a new mage or otherwise. Metal may not be present on a catalyst save for negligible amounts of mithril for aesthetic purposes.
